THE CATEDRAL

LA CATEDRAL-1
It is located on the streets García Moreno and Sucre, its style of construction is Roman and sports a facade of fine stonework chiseled masterfully. Inside, in the central part of its three naves, it can admire the paintings of the twelve apostles, painted by Raphael Troya. The altarpieces and altars carved in gold leaf of the Cathedral, are valuable works of art from the Quito School.

BASILICA LA MERCED

The Basilica de Nuestra Señora de la Merced was built in the nineteenth century. It is a monumental Roman style and preserves valuable paintings of saints, virgins and canvas of the Ibarra rebuilding. Its main altar is covered in gold leaf. In this church the Thanksgiving Mass was offered for the return of earthquake survivors.

CAPILLA EPISCOPAL

It was built by the initiative of Monsignor Gonzales and Calixto in 1990. Its facade is straight with a stone base, covered of tile and with pyramidal tower. The Capilla Episcopal has works of art from the colonial era.

BASILICA LA DOLOROSA

It is Neo -Roman style and 25 years of construction, conformed for two huge towers and colossal belfries; its main altar is carved on cedar wood, where the picture of Our Lady of Sorrows is venerated. It was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1987 and consists of a single nave with ceiling in coffer shaped, it is located in the parish of San Francisco, on Sucre and Liborio Madera Streets.

SAN AGUSTIN CHURCH

San Agustín Church was constructed in the seventeenth century. It has a single nave, after the earthquake of 1868 was the only church with standing walls. Its two towers culminate in pyramids, the facade is carved stone quarries of Tahuando.
The altar has images of Our Lady of Consolation, The Lord of Love, Saint Joaquin, Saint Ana and Saint Mónica; all of them worked by the Reyes brothers.

San Agustín is located in the corner of Rocafuerte and Flores Streets.

SAN FRANCISCO CHURCH

SAN FRANCISCO
It is part of the architectural ensemble of this ibarreña zone: Franciscan Theatre and Orphanage Manuela Perez. It is located at the intersection Juan Montalvo and, Pedro Moncayo Streets.
It was built in 1948, its facade has a particular design and, is covered of stone. Three interior naves, two of them at the lateral part and, one on the center where the image of the Virgin of Fatima, which was brought by the Franciscan order from Portugal is venerated.

SANTO DOMINGO CHURCH

The Santo Domingo Church is located in the Plazoleta Boyacá, dating from the foundation of Ibarra. It has Costumbrist style, eclectic Gothic and, a beautiful stone facade and its main altar is dedicated to the Virgen of Rosary, also offers space to variety of paintings and sculptures extraordinary artistic value along the time that are framed with beautiful wooden altarpieces.

CHAPELL SAN DIEGO

It is located on Flores and Rocafuerte steets, it is part of the high school “Diocesano Bilingue”. Its facade is made of carved stone blocks and the main door and, it dates from more than 150 years, constituting a vestige of colonial Ibarra. Its interior has several religious art works, painted by Legarda, famous artist of the Quito School. This chapel was remodeled preserving its architecture.

NUESTRA SEÑORA DEL QUINCHE CHURCH

The church Nuestra Señora del Quinche has been an important reference of the local faith of ibarreños, because there many religious events are held. It has a grotto dedicated to the Virgin of Quinche, it is located in front of the Germán Grijalva Park and, it is characterized by its interior symmetry in addition to its natural radiance and unique bell touch.

VILLA DE GUADALUPE CHURCH

Es una de las iglesias más tradicionales de la ciudad de Ibarra, está ubicada en las 4 esquinas, un barrio muy reconocido. Fue construida hace muchos años con adobe, técnica muy utilizada en esos tiempos. Esta iglesia soportó el gran terremoto que azoto a la ciudad. A causa de un incendio tuvo daños parciales, por lo que fue necesaria su remodelación y ahora se le puede considerar como una de las iglesias con más historia y sucesos del lugar.

It is one of the most traditional churches in the city of Ibarra, it is located on a neighborhood well-known as “las cuatro esquinas”. It was built many years ago with adobe, common technique used those times. This church resisted the great earthquake that struck the city. It had only partially damaged because of a fire, so its renovation was needed and, now it can be considered as one of the most historic churches of the city.

SANCTUARY EL SEÑOR DEL AMOR – CARANQUI

It is located in the Plaza de Caranqui, its construction dates from 1880, its style is Greco-Roman with Solomonic columns. It was built over the last sun temple worshiped by the Incas. In the main altar that is covered with gold leaf, a replica of the sculpture of Lord of Love remaines there. The picture of Hell is one of its most outstanding temple paintings.

JESUS DEL GRAN PODER CHURCH

The Church of Jesus del Gran Poder, is located at the southern entrance of the city, in the park El Ejido, its construction dates from to the nineteenth century, it was rebuilt after the devastating earthquake of 1987 and has had several modifications.
